Venezuelas Chavez Faces Protest

For three days now these group of Venezuelan students have not eaten any food.

They're staging a hunger strike against President Hugo Chavez.

They say they will only drink water until an Organisation of American States human rights delegation visits the country to investigate cases of alleged political persecution.

[Julio Rivas, Student Hunger Striker]:
"We're showing that young Venezuelans are not willing to accept a totalitarian government which violates our rights. We demand that the government allow human rights investigators into the country to examine the situation and we'll stay on hunger strike until that happens. We'll continue our protest to the bitter end."

The students accuse Chavez of jailing his critics on politically motivated charges. The government denies the claims.

This group of sixteen hunger strikers in Caracus are now urging students across Venezuela to join in their protest.
