Xenogears was great but due to financial reasons the gameplay switched from an rpg to a visual novel half way through. This really killed the experience for me as much potential for an even better game was obviously wasted.

So sad.

@Vilemk0 I am well aware of the financial problems the game had. In fact I know too much about this damn game for my own good thanks to its research and perfect works. While I disagree with you on the second half of the game, I could see why others may not like it. If the story was mediocre which it is not, the game would have been killed totally for me. Fortunately the story remained strong through out it's second half for me!

Man Magus during the winter break I got off school and beat SMT: Persona 4. At that time that was my favorite game of all time.

But then I saw Xenogears at my local store's retro selection. So I picked it up, and having beaten it I can also say that it is also my favorite game of all time.

The stories and concepts that inspired the game totally blew me away. And it is a benchmark on how I rate not just rpgs, but games in general.

Yea I agree completely the story has so much depth to it, its ridicilous but a good ridicilous at the same time. And its a very involving story i thought and has the best love story ever in a video game!

Xenogears was overlooked and underrated partially because the 2nd disc was rushed, in my opinion. But yeah, Xenogears is the best video game ever made hands down. The storyline just blew me away.

Having recently replayed the game, while its still my favorite I agree the second disc is a little rushed, but I will say this, the reason I think it was overlooked was that this game came out in fall of 1998 and two games overshadowed it....and that was ocarina of time, and Metal Gear Solid

I totally agree with you Magus, Xenogears is one of the greates games ever made and is almost flawless, but very few people have even heard of it much less played it.

Also, everything you said was just perfect. You described the game so well, and you did a great job conveying what it's all about. I feel like playing Xenogears again right now.

my first time through this game I read every single bit of text (i was 13) I maxed out my hours (99 hours)

second play through, 99 hours

third play through, 99 hours

fourth play through, 99 hours

...

To me it's a perfect combination of RPG, Anime, and graphic Novel.

Yes!!! Ever since I played Xenogears I have never been able to say another game has taken its place as #1 game ever!!! I still have the original discs and case, and the Playstation as well (actually i have two ps1's and two ps2's in my closet). I played it through twice and would have done it more times if my first disc didn't mess up (I WANTED TO CRY). I recently found out it got placed in the PSN and I am planning on downloading it, but was wondering if there is a way to download it for free?

Excellent video Magus. I only played it once but maybe one day I will play it again. It is my 2nd all time favortie game. Right now I am playing Xenosaga and plan on playing Xenosaga 1,2 and 3.

Magus, while I am not sure if you will ever read this comment, I have finally returned to Xenogears. I started playing it back in 2009 by your recommendation but left off around the Thames/Ethos/Billy Arc.

Now I delved back into the game and I have just reached Disc 2. More and more this game is feeling like one of the best RPGs but also stories and soundtracks in existence

Will probably make a very gloating review once I finish it. Thanks again for the recommendation. I hope you are doing ok!

I love Xenogears personally. It was not perfect (and some people will find it overly pretentious... coz of the religious overtones I guess *I mean, I myself think some things were superfluous and/or ridiculous*)... but I think it had huge potential despite its flaws.

I do not completely agree with the character development... not everyone was greatly developped (hello Rico, Maria, Emeralda, Billy and Chu-Chu *but screw the last one*). And Disk 2... sigh...

This game NEEDS a remake. That is all.
