When I was in Campbelltown one Thursday I couldn't mistake a number of clean-up piles sitting on the kerbside. I knew the council ran an on-call service, I just wasn't sure if the collections occured on the actual area's collection day or anytime during the week. Well lucky for me, while wandering around Ingleburn to find the garbage truck, this massive rear loader swung out of a side street and had me chasing it seconds later.

In the first action clip you'll see that the truck is starting to fill up with the way the blade doesn't fully close and starts to open while nearing the end of each pack cycle. During this video we follow the last four piles these guys managed to get into this MacDonald Johnston. I felt pretty sorry for them too, because they only had one more house to stop at, which unfortunately had a set-out too large to jam into the remaining space of the tailgate.

An enormous thanks goes to these two cool garbos, hope you all enjoy the clean-up footage, then of course please rate and comment.

Body Make: MacDonald Johnston
Model: 28m JP5
Chassis: Iveco Acco
Council: Campbelltown City
Contractor: SITA Environmental Solutions
Collection Type: Clean-Up / Bulk-Waste

  • why couldnt the mattresses have been recycled??????????/

  • @MrHellohel Generally if a mattress ends up in the back of a truck it will end up in a landfill, but I believe in the region where I shot this, everything is taking to a special sorting area to recover certain waste streams which may include mattresses. It is a shame seeing mattresses going to waste when they can be re-used or pulled apart to recover springs/timber frames.

  • why could they not go to the dump between the stops?

  • Well the idea is to usually get as much as you can on one load / try to pack everything on. That way it helps to avoid a potential extra trip to the dump, thus saving time and fuel... particularly if it's a long enough drive to get to the dump.

  • Great vid Mitch! If that truck only got about 40 stops on it, a Leach 2r3 would more than likely put double the amount on. That truck is not designed for that kind of punishment just by seeing the way the packing blade was flexing dangerously with those 2x4's.

  • Oh this truck does do some serious work depending where it's used. I got a video recently of another truck just like this and you should see how well it packed bulky items into the tailgate when it was full. I can't argue about the "flexing" at the end with that wooden item - it's just because of the angle the blade opens at. I reckon a 2R could've ripped through it with the size of it's packer cylinders!!!

  • @sk8rbro726 I believe the clean-up material collected in this region is sifted through to recover basic recycling and valuable materials, rest goes to landfill.

  • that truck is gonna get sick.lol

  • i don't know whats worse, the guy spending the time video taping this or me watching the video.
