Spring Gobbler Hunting in Virginia

I called this turkey for over an hour ! needless Did I know he was in a tree 74 yards from me an hour after sunrise ! I moved to get comfortable needless to say I spooked Him ! OH Well ! you win some you lose some !

After your first call (hen) and he answered I would have not called again. As close as he was he would be allmost in gun range after he flew down. Why would he want to come to a hen with a gobbler (your next call) unless he was a boss tom. Why would he want to come to another gobbler if no hen call. When they do come in and stop and display out of range they want the decoys to come to him. That is how it is done in nature. Just wait. Remember he is the one that wants the sex.

Blue carpenters chalk works the best to chalk up a box call. A piece of chalk not the powder. I will have to agree that your box calling needs a little practice. Once I had a lot of horrible calling going on out in front of me and I thought it was some teenage hunters in our club. It really p_____me off. About twenty minutes later a gang of over twenty turkeys came by me from the same direction. I could not believe they had made that noise. It was during the fall season. Thanksgiving dinner.
