Think of it this way and it really makes you think of how bad ass Sam truly is:

-He climbed all the way back up the Winding Stairs after (indirectly) being told to fuck off in order to save Frodo

-He single-handedly defeated a man-eating demi-god spider to save Frodo

-He climbed to the top of Cirith Ungol, killing many orcs, to save Frodo

-He carried Frodo up the face of fucking Mount Doom while suffering from dehydration and starvation

Anyone who thinks Sam isn't the real hero is ridiculous

Not a demi-god per say, Gandalf is one of the Maiar and is one of the five of the Istari (wizards). Each wizard is a powerful spirit disguised as an old man sent from Valinor to Middle-Earth to be rid of Sauron's power :P

In one of the episodes Dean made a prep speech to Sam (the Winchester, not this one), and he quoted part of this speech, which Sam recognized. It was a nice little homage imo.
