  • Yo, what's the point if you can't be harmed by the enemies? Not impressive. At all.

  • Yo, you can be harmed by the enemies. Read the description.

  • how can one tell if mystic defender is spellcaster 2?

  • Good question.

Spellcaster was released as Kujakuou AKA Peacock King in Japan (it's based on an anime). Mystic defender was released as Kujakuou 2 in japan. Other than the names you can see the similarity in the character ie. his purple outfit, charging up for fireball etc.

  • This was the first game I ever got for my megadrive exept for Altered Beast wich came with

    the megadrive.

This really is a very very good and very very

playable game and I must have compleated it at

    least 40 times I think!

  • Oh this brings fantastic memories. When I was a wee kid I played this game and I sucked at it, well I got to level 4. At my teenage year I finally conquered the whole game by myself and I got to see the very sexy part when the pretty lady came out of the creepy pillar of living flesh. Thanks for posting :D

  • @UchihaTonTon Awesome! Well, Tarnya did the music in this game on the Genesis, and quite frankly, I don't think he did a good job with it...

  • PRO!

  • Chuck Norris Playing.

  • Phenix Rie= Kodama Rieko, the original creator of the Phantasy Star series.

  • Man, this REALLY makes me wanna find a genesis from somwhere just to play this game again!

  • @talbot1939 True! The similarities are undeniable!

  • @921144666 Well, I've played the very 1st Spellcaster game, and there are serious resemblences between that game and Mystic Defender. I've alwasy thought that, that's what Mystic Defender was, a continuation or sequel to Spellcaster!

  • I cannot remember if I was high back in 1991 but I remember playing a similar game on the Mega Drive. The only difference is that the protagonist was a lady. Yes I've checked out the Kujakuou 2 ROM but no the one I played had better graphics and the level 2 onwards was way different. Also when charged the lady could do a big "hadouken" instead of 3 small hadoukens. Anyone has played this game before ? I sure missed my Mega Drive :(

  • Also, I applied this technique to my NEO-GEO AES, reluctantly of course.. it was a pricey system in 1990 (and still is today)! I was never able to get the Japanese versions unfortunately, but what I did get was equally as cool. It took many more tries than with the Gen, but if done correctly I would get a complete sound test. It would play every sound in the game, always in the same order too. I used to record them with my old sampling keyboard. :)

  • @miasmicmatt Haha.. I completely forgot I left that comment.

And yeah, I originally discovered this "trick" by ripping out a Ghouls 'N Ghosts cart and plugging it back in without powering off.. and PRESTO.. A Japanese logo!

I probably tried this with every cartridge after that moment. I also got to play "The Super Shinobi" complete with different ending and a cooler title screen. I'm surprised this hasn't been documented anywhere. Perhaps I should make a video on ripping out cartridges. :P
