@joshscomputer NO!! That is simply not possible - In people, the incubation period (the time between initial contact with the virus and onset of the disease) generally ranges from two to eight weeks. In rare cases, it can vary from 10 days to 2 years. In small animals (like dogs) it is usually shorter - about 1 to 4 weeks!! But it is NEVER just a few hours.

@Earthlinked No I mean, can he go from showing no symptoms at all to full-blown rabies over just a few hours like we see here?

@joshscomputer They can, but often there are subtle behavior changes that you'll notice. The animal also normally goes through a phase called "Dumb Rabies." It pretty much makes the animal..well dumb, just really lethargic and almost retarded. Then they slip into the "Mad Rabies" or "Rage Rabies" phase, which we see with the wolf and Old Yeller here. The movie Cujo shows the onset of Rabies much more accurately. But even that's not completely correct.

I think Disney's choice to extend this ending (in the book they shot him right after the wolf attack without waiting of find out) was brilliant. It's so much more heartbreaking cause Yeller really dissapear's before your eyes as rabies takes over and you feel what the family goes through that terrible night.
the sick part is...they gotta burn his carcass.or at least thats what I thought when I was about 4.And I could barely handle the shot....rip.rip.rip.rip.rip.rip...........................:'(
