If you don't have any impact tools, removing the crank pulley bolt is next to impossible. You can use the cars' starter to break that bolt loose. Follow the directions in the video exactly or you can cause some serious damage to person or property. I am not responsible for any damage caused by using this method. Do so at your own risk.

This is a clip from my timing belt how-to for the Zetec engine. The video can be found at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzL7u9TZ3WY

  • Nice lightweight crank pulley....murder on the crank bearings...

  • @Rick8683 It would be, if this engine wasn't internally balanced. After hundreds of members have put a collective millions of miles on these engine with under-drive pulleys without issue, I would guess it has no negative impact on this engine. This pulley was on this engine for about 160,000 miles. The turbo has been on the engine for over 60,000 miles.

  • @Rick8683 The engine is still stock and has not been opened up, rebuilt, or so mush as made an abnormal noise since I bought the car in 2000. The engine has over 210,000 miles on it and still puts up more than 170psi of compression on a cold engine.

  • When I did this, I had to do it several times, my engine stopped turning over, battery has juice, what happened?

  • @brianperry55 Are you sure your crankshaft rotates clockwise? Just because a battery shows 12 volts doesn't mean it is charged or that it is putting out enough current.

  • And how do you re tighten the bolt?

  • @Twinturbo120 I put red Loc-tite on my bolt, installed it, then used a hammer and breaker bar to get it as tight as I could. You just hit the end of the breaker bar in the same direction you tighten it. They also make chain vice grips you can use to hold the crank pulley in place (use an old belt so you don't damage the pulley) while you tighten the bolt. The breaker bar and hammer has worked for me without issue for 6 years now.

  • @thompsonjt20 By right way you mean take it to the dealer so they can rape you or go buy special tools you'll only use once. You and HunterCO1 must be related or gay lovers. The truth is, the way I do it works and not even a high trained expert mechanic like yourself would be able to tell the difference. I also see you have no videos up so until you can show us how to do the right way, shut the hell up.

  • @andyparf That's good to know. Another bit of advice to go with that. If you find your car doesn't have a keyed crank and/or has an interference engine, get rid of that poorly engineered POS.

  • Oh my CHRIST!! THANK YOU!! I was losing my mind outside trying to figure it out!

  • Tried using an impact gun on it and it didn't budge... maybe I need a better impact gun.
