Mengelberg was not denazifed, he was convicted in absentia and barred from his homeland. As for Furtwangler, his courage in remaining in Germany to oppose the nazis is what "saved" him. I won't make any speculations about Mengelberg, but Furtwangler was FAR from a nazi!

I must say I love Mengelberg, I studied in the Konijkleik Hogeschool in Den Haag for ancient music. I love Mengelberg more, know. He was submitted to hard process of Denazification after Geneva in 1946. Why the Allies saved Furtwangler?
