I don't know why India needs tanks at all. An Indian armored assault can easily be stopped by a well placed cow.
And yes, Indian tanks are cheap. Quality costs while sloppy work can be hand for pennies. I mean, a monkey chained to a drafting table can draw plans for a tank given 37 years, I wouldn't want to take it into battle though...
