    The force is probably divided 100 ways , each little salt crystal gets pushed in a slightly different direction. I believe the same principle allows people to lay flat on beds of nails without getting hurt.

  • You do the same when blasting.... drill the holes in the rock, insert your charges, back fill the hole with sand, and the blast bursts out craterwise - it fractures sidewards and blows outwards.
