  • I had an old German 3 speed with a mechanism like this. that was the worst bike I ever owned.

  • Dear DonHoraldo

The internal hub gears ara the best gear sistem. They are a bit heavy but are better than external gears. Look the Rohloff hubs.

Is possible your problem was your bicycle repair man and not the hub.

    Tink about iT

  • how many teeth does that chainring have?

  • Wow, looks like the opposite ratio of the schulmpf geared hub for the unicycle--this one goes slower when turned on.

  • I've ridden one of these a lot and I love them. The one shown in the video is not typical. I used much smaller front rings.

Hitting the button is a breeze after a few dozen changes and just as instinctive as shifting with your fingers.

This is a quality Swiss-made piece of kit.

  • DonHoraldo, fisheea... I've been on a cross-country tour and met foks who had over 10k miles on these. Mostly, I've seen these on "odd" bikes like recumbent trikes where it's hard (or impossible) to mount a front derailleur.

The Rohloff is a 14-speed hub with a wide range. It would probably last your lifetime. Of course, it costs roughly $1500!

Older 3-speed hubs often do skip out of gear or shift poorly. Mostly, this is due to worn out parts + these hubs were cheap when they were new!

  • This is not a really good system as you can only shift when your cranks are in horizontal position. When riding all mountain this is not an option because you must be able to shift whenever you want. Truvativ's system (hammerschmidt) does work whenever you want it to.

  • deleted my comment I see. doesn't change the fact that you haven't backed up your claim that it's "the best gear sistem"

  • Could be some massive weight sparing potential there as well. I expect this to get a lot lighter in a few years time.

  • This looks great!
