Major Slack's Red Alert Review - http://majorslack.com/classic-pc-games/red-alert-1-review/ * * * * *
About This Video
------------------------
I've been a huge fan of the Command & Conquer series right from the get-go back in the mid-nineties. (However don't ask me how I like the new Red Alert 3 as I'm liable to go ballistic on ya. Waste of 50 bucks as far as I'm concerned.)
Anywho, I decided to try my hand at modding, the product of which is my new Jackpot mission for the original classic PC game, Red Alert 1. Featured in this video is a demo of Part 2 of this mission. You can read a full overview of this mission on the Part 1 page ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szIDTzNKj7s ).
Along with a couple other modded units which appear later, this mission starts you off with a special General soldier unit equipped with a rapid fire missile launcher without whom which you probably wouldn't survive the first ten minutes. However, if the General dies, the mission fails (i.e., game over immediately) so use him wisely. The same goes for the Tanya you get later on.
Also, most of the civilians on the map are not your typical peashooter-packing pussies but rather are HEAVILY ARMED and EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. If a squad of these hellions gets loose in your base, you're likely to get pretty f#@ked up. At 1:06 in the video, you can see one of them take but a split second to annihilate a V2 Rocket after which he promptly chewed up half the health bar on a heavy tank. (And then thankfully he got run over.)
OTHER MISSION NOTES (read: FAIR WARNING)
1) This is a Soviet vs. Soviet mission. (Allied countries play small subsidiary roles.)
2) Free parabombs from the airfield option is disabled.
3) Free para-infantry from the airfield option is disabled.
4) MiG aircraft will be inaccessible to player (the enemy however will wield them relentlessly.)
5) The Tech Center will cost you $10,000 (But it'll be worth every penny. See Part 1 video for more details...)
6) Once again, some civilians are well armed and very dangerous (this may occasionally work in your favour.)
7) The Mammoth tank secondary weapon is rapid-fire (this will definitely work in your favour.)
8) Some areas are heavily mined (anti-tank).
9) Using the spy plane will greatly increase your chances of success.
HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE MISSION
You can download the mission here:
http://majorslack.com/downloads/jackpot_redalert_mission.zip
To install and play the mission, simply unzip the downloaded zip file and then copy the scu-0001.mix file into your Red Alert game directory (typically this is C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT). To play the mission, run Red Alert, click on 'Start New Game', select 'Normal' difficulty, select 'Soviet' and you're off to the races. The zip file contains a Readme.txt file with the same instructions.
To uninstall the Jackpot mission, simply delete the scu-0001.mix file from your Red Alert game directory.
This mission has been extensively tested from start to finish (unlike many other modded missions out there) and is fully compatible with any version of Red Alert 1 including The First Decade compilation pack (which I own) and the freeware version released last summer. However, with The First Decade compilation pack, although the mission plays fine, you won't see the correct mission briefing (haven't figured out how to do this yet with CNCTFD, sorry...)
And yes, that's right! The original CNC Red Alert was officially released as freeware last August (and runs quite happily on Windows XP)!
Download the Red Alert game files here:
http://www.commandandpatch.com/index.php
(At commandandpatch.com, click through to Downloads - Red Alert, CS, AM - Full Game ISO. Download one copy of the Red Alert 95 Soviet Disc and one copy of the Red Alert 95 Allied Disc.)
Full instructions on how to install Red Alert 1 on Windows XP are here at my site:

That's it.
Enjoy!

I heard "reinforcements have arrived" when I deploy my tech center" but I got no radar jammer whatsoever
xlthenoob 2 years ago
@xlthenoob, That's a Red Alert glitch. If the area where the chopper is trying to drop reinforcements is too crowded, the reinforcement drop will fail. Make sure that little circle of trees southwest of your base where you got all the other reinforcements is clear.
