I would agree with local government, beyond that he sounds like an over educated geezer to me. The United States has never had a country on its borders with the possibility to invade and utterly destroy it as France has. He's only seeing what he wants to see
I think Rahe nicely outlines the 4 characteristics that made American society strong and unique. The more the governing class grows, however, the weaker these important republican institutions become.
What a divergent version of socio-political history to say the least. It is very difficult to follow this interviewee whilst point by point one could re-write many books rebating him.
