personally i think its better tilt the vents upwards, then put the knife in the oppsite side that you do and pop the vent out. That way it stops the hazzard swithch surround from bending and possibly snapping, alsorather than a knife i find your car key will do just fine if you do it like this :)

A little tip, this will make your car fail an MOT,
I'm not saying don't to it, just make sure you've got one spare :)
