Since I upgraded from a webcam to a camcorder, I have been relying on the camcorder's built-in mic to make my YouTube videos. Today I rediscovered 2 of my forgotten gems: Edirol Audio Capture UA-4FX (by Roland) and Sony ECM-MS907 microphone.

In this video, I tried to demonstrate the sound captured with the camcorder's built-in mic and the sound captured using Edirol and Sony mic. The difference is huge!

Using Camcorder's Built-In Mic:
You hear a lot of background noise. The mic tends to magnify and it captures the surrounding sound loudly. Therefore, playing p (soft) and playing f (loud) sounds all loud. When I hit a certain louder notes, you'll hear "bzz". At times, you can also hear the camcorder's machine running noise. The piano sound is also somehow blurred. My unneat double-notes in the Sonata get "hidden" away ;-)

Using Edirol and Sony Mic:
You'll hear that the background noise is significantly reduced. Any sound further away from the mic is not captured. You can also hear much more dynamics in the same piano playing. There are no "bzz" sound at all playing lots of loud notes in the 2nd half of the video, and the mic is right at the piano! The other benefit is that I can place the mic wherever it suits. My unneat double-notes in the Sonata were clearly captured :-(

Both the Edirol and the Sony mic were not really made for my purpose. The Edirol is more for electric guitar, MIDI and voice, while the Sony mic was made for recording using MD player/recorder. But hey, it works for what I need them for. For sound recording software, I use Audacity, a free software available for Mac and PC.

Hopefully from now on, those who watch my videos benefit from a better sound quality in my future videos.

The Music:
If you are wondering, the first excerpt is Beethoven's Sonata in C minor Op13 , 2nd movement (Pathetique Sonata). The second excerpt is a piano arrangement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (Choral Symphony).

  • Is that an Sony C22 Fet or an Sony ECM 22P?

  • It's a Sony ECM-MS907 microphone.

  • i do have an audio interfase im tempting to record a music video :)

however what software did you use to record this video?

  • I used a camcorder to record the video and edit it with Sony Vegas software.

I used the Roland audio interface and Audacity software to record the sound.

    Good luck!

  • thx for your answer!

so you first did record the audio. When it was done. You record yourself playing?

Is not that you record the video and audio at the same time?

    thanks for your time :D

  • I recorded the video and audio at the same time, but separately using camcorder for video, and macbook for audio. Then I combined the video and audio using video editing software.
