Evelyn Ashford up against Marita Koch. It's a real shame that she pulled a hamstring in the final as the shwodown between Ashford and Gohr never materialised.

  • Definately, Ashford was a very graceful sprinter, a joy to watch!

  • Ashford pulled a hamstring in the final, so no contest unfortunately!

  • As far as I understand it, they never met until the 1979 world cup in montreal so .. I am very interested in this rivalry you are talking about ??? ( over 200 meters).

  • Yes..but she seldom run 200m - due to her injury which started in 1983 i think, she concentrated on 100m and i almost never noticed her run 200 after 1983...are there? not sure..

  • Evelyn "GDR's kryptonite" Ashford

  • @bzach71 She tried running the 200m at the Olympic Trials in 1984, but felt the twinge of pain after running a heat in the trials.

  • @TheCopper05 She would have been the Olympic champion in 1988 as well, had it not been the for cheating Florence Griffith-Jonyer !!

  • Was that little stumble at the end of the 100m a prelude to Ashford's hamstring injury?

Ashford was the best. No question about that. She proved she was the true Olympic

Champion, especially after the Olympics in 1984, and she be Marlies Gohr over in Europe.

  • @wookieboychew Hey, Yes it's a shame that Ashford and Koch did not meet over 200m at the WCin 1983. However remember, although Koch won the 200m, it wasn't a dominant win as she was pushed to the line by Merlene Ottey. So my bet would have been with a fit Evelyn Ashford. However, it's a race never too be seen!! Happy New Year.

  • @fjknm I totally agree. She clearly would have beaten Gohr in the 100metres had she not be injured. As for beating Marita Koch at 200,I'm not sure about that one. Ashford is awesome at 200 but I think Koch may have just edged her out. That race definitley would have been closer than hers with Gohr. Shame we never got a chance to see that race

  • STEROIDS.

  • Gohr won because Ashford was hurt...case closed.

  • It would have been a DOUBLE GOLD at 100m and 200m for Evelyn Ashford if she hadn't been injurned.

  • The only reason Gohr was World Champion is because Ashford was injured, and Gohr was doped. The next year 1984, Ashford left zero doubt who was the better woman.
