"This work is primarily inspired by a plant that, when it is time to die, must catch fire to be reborn. This image led us to look at the idea of having to struggle, to shed parts of oneself, in order to become something better. We incorporated this theme into our work by creating three sections, each with very different distinct moods. The first is the fire: fast energetic & powerful. The next follows being reborn and the last the struggle and ultimate failure to cling on before the need to catch fire again.
Thankyou to our dancers who were willing to take on the challenge with us."
In QL2's youth dance programs we place great importance on choreographic literacy. We aim to develop choreographic awareness in young dancers as soon as possible — moving beyond just doing the steps to being part of the creative process, and finally taking the reins in creating meaningful dance.
"Hot to Trot" gives dancers in Quantum Leap a mentored opportunity to create and present their own short works. By introducing them to creative and choreographic concepts, and then providing opportunities over several years, they develop both as dancers in a creative team, and as creators in their own right — the future of dance.
In 2005, James danced in the Sue Healey film, "13 and 32". In April and June 2006, James toured with the Sue Healey Company in Inevitable Scenarios.
Emma has been dancing for 18 years and has been performing in Quantum Leap works for the past 9 years. She is currently completing a Bachelor of Medical Science at ANU.
This is their sixth time co-choreographing in the Hot to Trot season with works Cant Do it Alone (2003), Secrets (2004), Undone (2005), Haunted Memory (2006) and Night Wandering (2007).
