One of the most favourite genres of the audience of Nyíregyháza is dance; the city has a wide variety of dance groups. There are numerous ensembles where the ones who are interested can deal with ballet, classical or modern dances, fashion dance or Latin dances. These groups organise high quality festivals, contests and workshop. The most popular are the folk dance ensembles that are trying to preserve the very rich folk heritage of Hungary and to display to this heritage on stage. Due to their tireless efforts Nyíregyháza is now a very powerful base of folk culture, a place where is worth coming to study, even from the outermost parts of Hungary. Nyíregyháza has a highly developed system of schools of arts. The knowledge that is gained in elementary schools can be developed in the Faculty of dance in the High School of Arts; the ones who are very talented are able to continue their studies on the Hungarian Dance Academy to become dance pedagogues. The dancers who finished high school can dance in Nyírség Folk Dance Ensemble, or are able to find a job in Budapest as professional dancers, or show dancers in theatres.
