Special Olympics Southern California provides people with intellectual disabilities the chance to grow and develop themselves through sports. Their training as a Special Olympics athlete transcends into everything they do in life. Debi Anderson is an example of that.
Participating in Special Olympics has given Debi the confidence and joy to accomplish anything. She is a gold medal runner and participates in rhythmic and artistic gymnastics — something she could only dream of doing.
"Before I was a Special Olympics athlete, I was just me," said Debi, who has participated in Special Olympics for 13 years. "Now, I can call myself a Special Olympics athlete and a Global Messenger. I can do almost anything. My motto is nothing is impossible." Global Messenger's are Special Olympics athletes who help spread the message and vision of the movement.
Debi's true passion has been giving back to people with intellectual disabilities.
"Debi has a compassion for kids with intellectual disabilities that far exceeds what you and I have," said Claron Anderson, Debi's father. "That's come out of Special Olympics. She knows what they need and she provides it to them. She has a special place in this world."
