(please watch in high quality, the video's better but more importantly the sound is better!)

A few things to note:

The guitar sounds are the amp miced with a MXL990 (great cheap mic!) about 1 foot away from the edge of the speaker cone.

The 990 is going into a Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp with the "tube" dial at noon, into a Presonus Firestudio Project, into Cubase LE. There is a very small amount of distortion that wasn't intentional, which you can mostly hear during the clean strat harder playing. Just clearing up that that wasn't from the amp!

I played the same chords over and over to help compare the sounds, not bore you! My goal is to show that you can get a variety of sounds out of this amp based on the guitar, and in this case without even changing the settings too much. Also to show that this amp is definitely usable for heavier music, and the reverb isn't nearly as bad as people say.

  • Does anyone know what one of these sounds like with an Epi Dot? (or similar guitar). I'm guessing it would be like the Les Paul seen here as it's got humbuckers, but not as deep sounding? Thanks for any advice.

  • @MrPeteEa I wasn't able to find much as far as demos of the Dot or similar with a Pathfinder, but the Pathfinder is definitely in the same family sound-wise as the AC15, and i was able to find a number of demos on here of that combo, also with the Epi Casino. I think it'd be a great fit, since Vox amps aren't generally too treble-light, which is a good fit for humbuckers. I think your estimation's probably a good one, like a Les Paul but maybe less bass-heavy.

  • Since this amp isn't great for shows, what vox amp would you suggest to play live?

  • @xfoggiiieex This amp would be great for smaller shows, or any size where the amp will be miked (I've seen it used live many times). But for a higher powered amp, I Like the AC15. I almost bought one when I was looking for a nicer amp, but didn't find the sound different enough from the Pathfinder to justify the money. Most Vox's seem to be in the same family, except the Valvetronix series, which I'd steer clear of. One of the few amps I've had a very hard time getting any usable sound from.

  • GREAT review. an excellent variety of tonally different guitars through the amp. I wish all amp reviews were like that

  • @drubicle Thanks so much!

  • joeswan58...looking at your activity on your profile after you made a snide comment on one of MY videos, I can see that you like to make snide comments about shit that does not concern you. At least this guy has the balls to show himself...quite unlike a typical youtube hater such as yourself. Climb back into your hole and go away, you are useless.

  • if i want to play like british post-punk like as the libertines or some kind like that and other 70's punk stuff.. is this amp can impress me?

im pretty sure that this amp can generate the vintage sound very well.

    thank you for sharing :D
