Lyrics:
Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone,
Feeding her flock near to the mountain side.
The shepherds knew not whither she was gone,
But after, her lover Amyntas hied.
Up and down he wandered while she was missing;
When he found her, O then they fell a kissing.

Composed by John Farmer, "Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone", from "The King's Singers, Madrigal History Tour, The England"

  • Beautiful singing. Unfortunate haircuts.

  • Up and down, apparently.

  • By today's standards: "Oh, then he fucked her brains out."

  • @tchiu654321 apparently mentions to the color green, the grass and all things related to being outside, playing games, etc, means having sex :) Apparently. I am most puzzled about the villancico "si abra en este baldres" I had read about its meaning once, online, but I cant seem to find any other explanations that support the theory about what was going to be made with the piece of fabric they are talking about :S

  • Sang this in college and thought what you thought, tchiu. But now that I'm older, I think it's even less innocent than your explanation. I don't think the reference is to the lady herself, much less than something a lady possesses that the gentleman had a difficult time finding ("up and down he wandered"), but when he found "her"...then they fell a-kissing, a-kissing and then they fell a-kissing. Just trying to be clinical in this analysis without getting too graphic.

  • Did anyone know that this video is about sex? Most unsacred Renaissance music was. Phyllis was a sheppard and the man who found her was kissing her. After the kissing they were going up and down, up and dwn, up and down. That is actually meant to mean that they were having sex. During the Renaissance, the unsacred musioc contained hidden sexual inuendos quite often. They were subtle enough so that the church would not notice them. Let me know what you guys think :)

  • Times havent changed much atall.

  • We sang this back when I was in High School. It's a very fun song to sing in a group.

  • @ThePCGamerFussell Oh, sorry, I forgot to add that only INFORMED opinions should be taken into consideration. I somehow didn't consider that one of them. Non-informed opinions are called PREJUDICE and should be eradicated from the face of the Earth, slowly but surely, without demeaning their holders but without any hesitation in doing so. A cultural discussion may ensue from this on what constitutes prejudice for a given society, I grant, but please let us leave it here or we'll never end :-)

  • @ThePCGamerFussell Allow myself to sound pedantic if I quote myself: 'all peope, including ignorant arseholes, are worth of respect and appreciation'. Having gotten that out of the way, I will add that some opinions are worth eradicating, as it surely will happen, such as irrational homophobia (which was the case here and I falter when applying to it the term 'opinion'). If we didn't feel (at least emotionally) superior to the homophobes, they will forever pass down the meme of idiocy. Peace!

  • Wow this song is pretty graphic (for 1599)!
