This bird fashions a hook out of a hairpin to get the food out of the tube.

you are wrong - the average 4 year old will stick their hand in there and their hand will most likely get stuck and then there will be lots of screaming and crying for mommy..

I think that the fact the bird fished it out counts, or do you want the bird to use a knife and fork to eat that food to be completely sure of its intelligence?

The funny part about your example is that 'crying for mommy' turns out to be a pretty effective way to get it out of the jar since 'mommy' already knows what to do.

Additionally, I think you're underestimating four-year-olds. That might happen at two years, but it happening at four is probably a stretch.

I don't know if it counts as "smarter". They instinctively know their territory and how to use it, but calling them "smarter" is ignoring the fact that you probably drove up in a jeep, brought some binoculars to study them, and are writing your observations down on a pad of paper with a ball-point pen.

Greatest obstacle for the bird: twitchy-ass neck movements.

It never figured out how to turn off "snap-to-grid".
