Ambient computing, ambient intelligence, context awareness, pervasive computing, ubiquitous computing and calm technology are all associated terms.

They describe computing capabilities of the future, which respond to human presence by seamlessly adapting configurations of technology to changing situations.

This type of computing is typically characterised as unobtrusive, or invisible, and depends upon a massively distributed device network which, on the whole, is not yet available.
