Drunk or impaired driving killed nearly 13,000 people in 2007. That's one person every 40 minutes. That makes it everyone's problem.

It seems that many people were doing their part to put a stop to this completely preventable epidemic. Alcohol-related traffic fatalities reached a low point in the late 1990s. Research also indicates that 62% of Americans exposed to the now-iconic Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk campaign have personally intervened to stop someone from driving drunk, no doubt saving countless lives.

However, since the late 90's, alcohol-related driving deaths have been steadily increasing. It seems that though the campaign was very successful, it did not change the behavior of many potential impaired drivers. Many thought the messages to be targeted at overtly drunk drivers, and not them. When decision time came, they would consider themselves merely "buzzed" and get behind the wheel.

The new PSAs created to address this gap were released in December 2005 with the objective to inspire dialogue and recognition of the dangers of "buzzed" driving and subsequently, to motivate people to stop driving buzzed. The next installment expands on this message, equating buzzed driving and drunk driving and demonstrating the devastating consequences that can occur as a result of buzzed driving. The overall campaign hopes to educate people that consuming even a few drinks can impair driving and that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.

  • I gotta say that kid sitting up and saying 'yeah i feel good' absolutely cracked me up

my mom used to drive drunk with us in the car all the time. Its one of the worst things you could do.

  • There are a lot of sober people who kill pedestrians and passengers. They should make a commercial where the person says that they were sober, then the paramedics stop and the patient gets up and then the guy asks, "really?" and the paramedic says, "no, not really." then everybody goes back to what they were doing and it says that your not safe in a car, even if your sober.

  • @lurch321 its supposed to suggest that if you thiunk buzzed driving is ok then you are wrong

  • @electrifiedwaters like a texting & driving commercial or something.

  • @FromA2mee Oh, it is not? So the lowered perception is nothing? You are so big and all, you can handle a little alcohol? What the hell is wrong with you people? If you are impaired, you do not need to hit the legal limit. Alcohol impairs you, as does being tired or overly stressed. It poses a danger, and it kills people. There is no God given word that driving would is a universal right that can't be taken away. If you can't refuse a drink, then do not drive.

  • I don't ever plan on driving drunk (I hardly ever drink in the first place), but just exactly how is this ad supposed to discourage drunk driving.....................?

  • @StoxieT Tired driving is worse than drunk driving, actually. They did some study a while back.

  • Before I was legal I had a totally different say on driving under the influence. But now I believe driving buzzed is equal to a doctor/nurse or any other person driving home after a 12+ hour work shift.

They should make TSA's about driving over-tired.

  • that was probably the funniest PSA i have ever seen

  • These ads don't work... The meaning is lost to the people who do these things. Cast not your pearls before swine like the saying says.

  • So there's no difference between drunk driving and buzzed driving is there? So you would be indifferent if I finished this case of beer before I hit the road then. I guess it depends what kind of world you want to live in. You have option 1 where you are have the ocassional drunk drivers or option 2 where you have occassional drunk drivers but you're living in a police state where people are searched routinely. Your choice.

  • That bitch is gonna die...LMAO...ROTFL...LOLOLOL!!!! : )
