Replacing a scratched LCD cover on a Canon EOS 5D SLR

A short film (set up in a hurry - apologies for lighting) showing how I replaced a badly scratched LCD screen cover on my Canon 5D camera.

I bought the replacement window kit from ebay ($25 from uscamera), which included the new window and the adhesive tape.

You will need a hair-dryer, to heat up and soften the adhesive; a thin knife or similar sharp edge for levering out the old window; a suction cup (optional) to help with the removal of the old window.

This isn't supposed to be a definitive guide on how to repair a damaged LCD window, just a record of how I did it. I hope you find it useful. Any questions, please ask.

@gracie797123 Hi - I am not sure about the Nikon D3100, mostly because I have only ever used Canon DSLRs, and I am not an expert on LCD screen replacement! However, a quick google shows that replacement LCD screens for the Nikon D3100 can be bought from a number of sources. How the screen is attached to the camera and how you get it off is another matter. The fact that tool kits are sold with the screen seems to indicate a different approach with different tools is needed. Good luck!

@elalis Hi - thanks for your comment, I am glad the video was helpful. I bought the screen and adhesive strip as a kit from the ebay outlet of US Camera (uscamera.com). I think it cost about $25. Try a search on ebay for "Canon EOS 5D LCD Display Window".

Wow I had no idea its like this to pull off the glass. I just purchased a used 40D and the top LCD glass has some scratches...I wonder if the process might be the same for that.

In your research, did you come across a method for replacing the LCD itself? My LCD cover broke so badly it damaged the LCD as well :(

Just replaced it successfully as instructed.

I had been quoted £130 by a repair shop. They said the camera needed to be stripped down to replace the LCD cover (I don't think so).

Many thanks for posting this. I had tried to polish out a scratch on my EOS500D. Big Mistake - it removed some of the anti-reflection coating. Won't do that again!

Just ordered a new LCD cover, will use your video for guidance - better not have the hair dryer too hot!
