I'm wondering, how do they get that high level of background distortion behind the guitar and bass. I know that it isn't the guitar being distorted directly, but it's something else. Anyone know what it is?

no, its not the strobe light. Kurt probably did that to show he hates the song. Anyways, theres plenty of guitarists out there who rip mind blowing solos with lights shining in their face.
