Demetrius was the king of Syria between 162 and 150 B.C. (note the middle-eastern influences in the music). As a youth, he was outcasy by his father, the king, and sent to Rome as a prisoner. Timarchus usurped the throne by force and was a cruel leader. He was later defeated by Demetrius and Demetrius became known by the Babylonians as "the redeemer". It turns out that Demetrius was also a cruel, ineffective, and careless leader and was intensely disliked by the Syrians.
