A clip from some home movies of Blackpool trams at Talbot Square in October 1991. There are OMOs and centenary cars in their original guise and the old Blackpool Corporation livery is everywhere to be seen. Somehow there seem to be more trams than today as well....

  • why don't they use as many trams now as they did then! It kinda ruined part of Blackpool for me this year.

  • @Doctortrek1 You are right there! Tram jams are very much a thing of the past - except when one breaks down!

  • What was the half cab bus at the left of the shot @ 3.10? I thought the PDR's had gone by '88?

  • The bus in question is one of a batch of Routemasters bought when London was withdrawing them.

  • I was a trem driver in Blackpool in the early 60's. At that time, all the tram trecks were in use. All the way up Talbot road,Abingdon Street,Church Street,Whitegate Drive,Marton, and down to South pier. There was a tram depot at Marton, too. When buses were introduced ,there was a public out cry, about the noise ofthe bus brakes. Plus the Transport Authority tried to run the buses on the same frequencies, as the trams, disregarding the fact that buses did not have a dedicated track!

  • Many thanks for your interest, it's good to hear from a genuine Blackpool Tram driver! I think there are many places where people are now wondering about the wisdom of getting rid of trams so quickly (witness the places where they are being reintroduced!), apart from any economic and environmental considerations, trams are such friendly vehicles.

  • 1991 the year that Brian Adams was number 1 for 15 weeks, and that point Blackpool was soon tobe not the only place in mainland Britain to have trams

  • As more and more years roll on by, videos such as this become priceless.......... 5*

  • WOW..! Some crazy shell-suits in this video! and the occasional Christmas jumper!!

Good to see so many trams in operation.

  • Reminds me a bit of Manly, Sydney in the old days. We stupidly got rid of our trams.

    Thanks Mick for sharing.

  • i was there over 12 years ago :P

  • "Hornby Road, Forest Gate, all change for Stanley Park!". I've lived most of my life in Canada but I still remember the conductor calling out street names on the Marton route. Also, I'm pretty sure the tracks were gone from Talbot Road before the 60's. Lytham Road and Dickson Road were still in use at that time.

  • lovely stuff. smacks of the classic puffer jacketed downturn of the early 90s
