"La chancon des damnes" ("Song of the Damned"). Motet by an anonymous 14th century composer, in Latin and medieval French. From La Nef's 1995 album "The Garden of Earthly Delights" (Dorian Recordings)--songs from 14th and 15th century Cathar, French, Spanish, Andalusian, and Sephardic traditions and having to do with Classical, Christian, and Islamic conceptions of Paradise, Heaven, and Hell. The album title refers to the triptych by Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516) in the Prado Museum, Madrid. La Nef comprises Daniele Forget, Rafik Samman, Sylvain Bergeron (founder), Isabelle Marchand, Claire Gignac, and Jean-Pierre Noiseux.
Deo confitemini
Qui sua clementia
Carnem suo numini
Junxit in Maria.
Ut Abrahe semini
Promissa ferret auxilia
Se conformans homini
Sic subjectum crimini
Seductum hostis malitia
Redemit morte pia.
Acknowledge the Lord
who by his clemency
united the flesh
with his spirit in Mary,
so that to the seed of Abraham [i.e. mankind]
he might bring the promised help,
by transforming himself into a man.
Thus [mankind], subject to crime,
misled by the enemy's wickedness,
[The Lord] redeemed by his pious death.
I love Bosch and the early music!
