Lang on the Hudson is a course offered at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, where students build a 26-foot Whitehall gig, a traditional four-oared rowing vessel specifically designed for the waters of New York Harbor. As the spring advances students launch their boat to learn the basics of fixed-seat rowing and harbor seamanship. By mid-May, they are ready to undertake longer exploratory voyages in New York Harbor and up the Hudson River. The course also offers an introduction to harbor geography, estuary ecology, and the political processes that are shaping the contemporary urban waterfront.
