With all antidepressants, it's safest to avoid alcohol, particularly if you intend to drive. If you do decide to drink alcohol, you should never exceed the recommended daily limits.

With some antidepressants, you should avoid certain alcoholic drinks completely.

Evidence shows that fluoxetine does not react with alcohol. Similarly, sertraline, citalopram and escitalopram are unlikely to significantly increase side effects from drinking alcohol.

However, if you're taking fluvoxamine or paroxetine, the risk of drowsiness after drinking alcohol may be increased.

Manufacturers still advise that you avoid drinking alcohol while taking SSRIs.

If you're taking TCAs (particularly amitriptyline), drinking alcohol can make you feel drowsy and affect your co-ordination. The effects may be worse during your first few weeks of taking TCAs.

There's also an increased risk of drowsiness with some related antidepressants, such as mianserin and trazodone.

If you're taking TCAs, avoid alcohol for the first few weeks, until you can assess whether you have any side effects.

If taken with tyramine, MAOIs can cause serious side effects, such as a sudden, dangerous rise in your blood pressure.

If you're taking a MAOI:

•it's best to not to drink alcohol
•avoid completely any alcoholic drinks that contain tyramine
If you're taking moclobemide (a reversible MAOI) and you drink alcohol, you're unlikely to get serious side effects

  • @Headshothorror4488 not just kids who do those things. most of the time its adults.

  • in other words, dont be a drunkard whilst taking antidepressants.

  • @Headshothorror4488:

This guy seems INTENT on pointing out that its only EXCESSIVE drinking which is bad, when mixed.

He repeats that, over and over.

He is also careful not to say that ANY drinking is bad with A.D. - just EXCESSIVE !

Its about as close as you could possibly get, to an advertisement, promoting drinking and AD's, in moderation !!

    Hmmmmmmm !

  • funny how alcohol (poison-drug) is legal and pot is not, Alcohol causes 100% more harm. Kids drink it, Stand up people make it illegal !!!!!!!! Kids crash & kill others , wake up not knowing what u did cause this drug makes u do stupid shit u would not do normally. Pot does not & has good effects , safer then all pills from doctor.
