Kumare is a wise guru from the East who indoctrinated a group of followers in the West. Kumare, however, is not real--he is the alter ego of American filmmaker Vikram Gandhi, who impersonated a spiritual leader for the sake of a social experiment designed to challenge one of the most widely accepted taboos: that only a tiny "1%" can connect the rest of the world to a higher power. Concealing his true identity from everyone he meets, Kumare forges profound and spiritual connections with people from all walks of life. What I liked about this movie is that it doesn't make fun of people for having spiritual beliefs, per se. What it does poke fun at is the mindset that another human being should tell you how to get there. And he never is cruel to these people. At first, I kind of felt bad that he was tricking some of them, who seemed really lost and desperate. But, you can see that he got attached to them and cared about them and wanted them to have the ability to guide themselves. Very well done.

No new age spiritual leaders "teachings" would pass a review board. It seems to me he opened up a segment of the new age population who are actually hurting people. Its modern day snake oil. I live in socal and see lots of this. I have decided that 90% of the new age people are using it as an angle to make money and 10% are deeply troubled and looking for answers. Shameful.

First off, his experiment would never pass a review board. Think about that. Second, those people who were hurt by his deception CAN learn about helping themselves without a guru. However, breaking someone's trust by deceiving them and making them out to be fools is not the way to go about it. Thus, he hurt people. Even if he hurt one person, that's gone way too far.

There are more elegant ways, tasteful teachings and physical disciplines, that lead people back to themselves quietly, personally.... with respect, love and compassion. A reality tv show is not one if them. If you honestly believe that Vikram Ghandi did this all for "them," than, you are much more naive than the participants.

Were you hurt by his deception? if not then stop complaining. they all had a choice to feel deceived or not. he's proving that you shouldn't worship false idols, only learn about yourself through them. those people couldn't do that.

What Vikram did was unethical. 4-5 people shut off contact with him after his reveal. They were extremely hurt by his deception. Vikram's reveal was also a very pussy way to get out of the situation. Kumare is a symbol of what Vikram hates: fake guru's. So how can he at the end say that Kumare was his ideal self? I would have had more respect if he just said something like, "Look, I was out to make a doc about the ridiculousness of guru's and faith but I learned something from ya'll."
