Hit year was 1970/1971, DRIVING HOME by Jerry Smith spent 20 weeks in the Australian Go - Set charts, reaching a high position of number 17, a cd stereo version of this track can be found at this dougiejohn youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s34fSL7kXaU although the original single above has much more bass response. Some great memories of a big instrumental hit. Jerry has been an organist since he came out with his first organ album Street Fair in 1971 under the name of The Magic Organ. Steppin' Out (here's a link to Steppin' Out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MICgwhwfc_M), was on his sixth album entitled Good Time Show released in 1974. Here's a link to Louisiana Man, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRN8HWZkGWo. Tokyo Butterfly, (here's a link to Tokyo Butterfly, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi7cjs6SlTU) was on his third album simply entitled The Magic Organ released in 1973. Jerry's other success was Truck Stop, (here's a link to Truck Stop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_T3LJYioUY) Jerry Smith got a little credit on the Dixiebelles tunes, "(Down at) Papa Joe's" (here's a link to Down At Papa Joe's, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE7fIvkYhok) and "Southtown, U.S.A.".(here's a link to Southtown USA, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qwt4Ms_NBqI) The records credit the Dixiebelles with Cornbread and Jerry. We now know who the Jerry is that they are referring to. He deserved more credit, though.

  • you can find it on a collection called 'The 60/70 hit collection' are you in Australia?

  • @RedrooAU thanks, i am in Australia, this 60/70 collection cd you mention, do you have a catalogue number for it? Maybe you could upload the CD version to youtube, that would be great.

  • Finally I have found this tune! Have been looking for it for years! I remember hearing it as a boy in the early 70s and have whistled it ever since. Fantastic. Thank you so much.

  • @buckaroo1956 Yes its good to whistle to, maybe i'll one day find a cd version as this one is the original 45rpm single record. (a bit sratched) catchy tune.

  • Last time I heard this was in 1970 or 1971. I remembered the tune almost perfectly although I thought it was slightly slower. Damn, Youtube is great. I too say thanks for posting this.

  • He's like a cross between Jerry Lee Lewis and Floyd Cramer.....and sounds great!!!!

  • You gotta try find Jerry Smith "Lil'ol'me"...by Cornbread & Jerry circa 1961;it's fantastic

  • @M1u2s3i4c glad you liked it, i think its great, he had another hit too, called 'Steppin Out' i have that somewhere, will upload it one day soon, see ya.

  • Play it LOUD! I forgot about this one. I was hunting for Truck Stop for years. Found that one and that led me to this one!

Jerry Smith's honky-tonk piano often filled the time leading into the top of the hour, and it was frustrating that I could rarely hear it to its end.

  • In Australia Drivin Home charted well back in the 2nd half of 1970. It entered the Go Set Top 60 charts on the 29th August, at its highest point reaching Number 20. Drivin Home got lots of radio play and was very handy for those moments where a short music track was needed, Drivin Home's duration being 1min 59secs. It stayed in the Go Set charts for a mammoth 20 weeks, what a classic.
