Dauphin Island, Alabama - What a Difference a Year Makes

Dauphin Island, Alabama, named after Louis XIV's great-grandson, is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Entry to the island is made by crossing the Gordon Persons Bridge, three mile long high rise bridge, which opened a in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island.


Dauphin Island, along with most of the south Alabama area has been severely affected by the oil spill in 2010. Dauphin Island's annual Deep Sea Rodeo, which brings in thousands of tourist, was cancelled. The tourists stayed away for the summer. Long term affects are unknown especially in the seafood industry that thousands rely on for their livelihood?

The seafood industry may be back, but will our neighbors to the north have enough trust in the safety of the seafood to start buying again? Once you loose your customers, it is hard to get them back. So, what do the business owners and employees do in the meantime?

We revisited Dauphin Island during the 4th of July weekend this year. There are signs that the area is rebounding.
