I have the Cassette single of "Rooms on Fire" and this song "Alice" was the 2nd song aka ( the "B" side).I actually liked this more then the other song. :+) Way back in 1989.

Critics got real annoyed with her by this album-wanted her to come "out of her land of fairires, witches, dragones & elves' but someone has to live/visit there and write about don't they? Anyway used metaphorically, her stories can be as clever & bewitching as anything surely. Like "Like a virgin touched for the very first time" should ever be considered genius, yet that old trout Madogga is considered the holy grail of music. WTF!

I love this song!! I think she is singing about her drug addictions...she flew down to the mountain city, heard she went higher....she is flying high like anyone who gets high, through an astral dimension within time...she experiences different characters within herself, just as Alice in wanderland does. The mad hatter is telling her to come down before you die from an overdose,,,so she goes back to the other side of the mirror, to get back in the real world and her reality.........

again, this takes me back to late summer 1989, i'm 20 years old living in okinawa having a relationship with an individual that's completely and terribly wrong, but damn it feels so right and GOOD! came back home march 1990 to my beloved california. lost touch with this wonderful being. now, over 20 years later, i wonder all the time should i have made a different decision? when i listen to this song i always realize how time really does just slip by, and there is no going back to the other side
