Big Joe Turner (born Joseph Vernon Turner Jr., May 18, 1911 -- November 24, 1985[1]) was an American blues shouter from Kansas City, Missouri.[2] According to the songwriter Doc Pomus, "Rock and roll would have never happened without him."[2] Although he came to his greatest fame in the 1950s with his pioneering rock and roll recordings, particularly "Shake, Rattle and Roll", Turner's career as a performer stretched from the 1920s into the 1980s.

  • Doesnt this technicaly predate anything that became known as Rock and Roll? I think Big Joe was the pioneer of rock.

  • @bwd81977 He indeed was the pioneer. Doesn't get enough credit for his contributions. That's why his songs are up here. So many future artists covered his songs.

  • Big Joe Turner was Rhythm and Blues, the precursor of Rock and Roll. I listened to all of the greats, long before it was the popular thing to do. Loved Ike and Tina, Lavern Baker, Ruth Brown, and all the 50's R&B singers. Big Joe Turner was one of my favorites.

  • Thank to You Tube for keeping this great music alive. I never get tired of listening to it since 1952.

  • It is not rocknroll IT´S ROCK & ROLL!!!!!

  • Great rocknroll, theres nothing to beat this today, all the greatest.

  • Well heck! I feel like a total bag of freezer rice not knowing this tune was by Big Joe instead of the Johnny Burnett Trio. I'm not completely surprised of course, just feel stupid. I like both versions nonetheless and also Elvis Costello's version.
