We are the creators of AreYouInterested.com®, one of the biggest dating apps on Facebook and mobile. Our combined user base of over 7.4 million* active users is constantly chatting on our instant messaging platform, and the stats are actually a bit staggering. We decided to create a slick visualization of the people online and chatting in real-time, so it would be easy to see just how many people are meeting and communicating through AreYouInterested.com.
Here is a globe that shows all of our users and their conversations in real-time. The blue dots are users who are actively using our instant messaging technology right now. We're grabbing these online now users from our live IM servers to keep the development simple. In reality, the dots actually represent only 20 percent of our total online now user base.
The moving lines indicate when two users begin having a conversation via IM. Essentially, when a user sends an instant message to another single, both users will display the moving lines, signifying a conversation.
As you can see, we get tons of conversations in the U.S. and in Europe, especially London.
This was built on an open source Google Chrome experiment The WebGL Globe http://www.chromeexperiments.com/globe, which allows for data to be plotted geographically. We took that code and plugged in our proprietary data. Our database of currently chatting users (iPhone and web) was cross-referenced against our location database. This data is then streamed into the WebGL Globe so the lines can pop up as pairs of users start new conversations.
