Excellent use of technicolor, lighting, set design to create a gloomy gothic atmosphere,never expected to see this in an 1948 movie! "Forbidden passion,family secrets and murder" with traces of Jane Eyre+Wuthering Heigts,but not sure if its a pinnacle of gothic melodrama or something entirely different. Plenty of killings,a not much "dark romantic" hero,and its last shot down into the blazing red... Acc. to Imdb mentioned by M.Scorsese as a guilty pleasure...But I´m not Scorsese. Its a pleasure!

one of the most beautiful examples of technicolor. wonder what it was like to see an original print of this in a darkened theatre. coming at the tail end of the 40's british costume picture cycle, this expensively mounted film didnt do too well at the box office.
