The Statue of Liberty is a monument that was presented by the people of France to the United States of America in 1886 to celebrate its centennial. Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The copper-clad statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence and was given to the United States by France to represent the friendship between the two countries established during the American Revolution. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the statue and obtained a U.S. patent for its structure. Maurice Koechlin—chief engineer of Gustave Eiffel's engineering company and designer of the Eiffel Tower—engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the repoussé technique, where a malleable metal is hammered on the reverse side. The statue is of a robed woman holding a torch in her raised right hand and in her left a tablet inscribed with "July IV MDCCLXXVI," Roman numerals for the U.S. independence date, July 4, 1776. The statue is made of a sheathing of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf (originally made of copper and later altered to hold glass panes). It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal with a foundation in the shape of an irregular eleven-pointed star. The statue is 151 ft (46 m) tall, but with the pedestal and foundation, it is 305 ft (93 m) tall.
Ellis Island, at the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor, is the location of what was from January 1, 1892, until November 12, 1954 the main entry facility for immigrants entering the United States; the facility replaced the state-run Castle Garden Immigration Depot (18551890) in Manhattan. It is owned by the Federal government and is now part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
The Statue of Liberty is turning 125 years old on October 28 2011 and 5 cameras have been installed on her torch allowing viewers to gaze out at New York Harbor. The cameras will be switched on during a ceremony to commemorate the statue's dedication on october 28, 1886.

So cool:) Isn't something how France seemed to empathize so closely to America's experiences by giving us the Statue of Liberty, as well as the Gigantic and expressive painting at Gettysburg on display there. So wonderful, meaningful and deeply thoughtful are these gifts to America from France.
