Review of Linux Mint 12 Lisa Final Release with the new MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extension) and MATE (Fork of Gnome 2.3) desktop environments.

0:01 Intro
1:44 Specific Features to Mint
4:24 Pre-Installed Apps
7:45 Conclusion

Linux Mint comes ready to use out of the box with the patent encumbered codecs such as MP3, MP4, and Flash pre-installed, as well as a large selection of applications pre-installed including:
Banshee Media Player
Firefox Web Browser
Thunderbird Email
Sun Java
Complete suite of LibreOffice
Gimp Image Editior
gThumb Photo Manager
UFW (Uncomplicated FireWall)

Conclusion:
80%
Linux Mint is an excellent Distro for anyone new to Linux or for anyone wanting a traditional style desktop rather than Ubuntu's Unity desktop environment.
Unfortunately it is let down with some speed issues causing it to be a lot slower than Ubuntu 11.10 (which it is based on)

  • @alexvq100 Heres the download link linuxmint(dot)com/download(dot)php

Theres only three versions - Two Gnome based and One KDE based.

Perhaps the KDE version will work better for you?

  • How Can i upgrade to Linux Mint 12 From terminal

  • @henrypr They don't recommend doing an upgrade that way, but heres the tutorial

  • I have an old netbook around 2 - 3 years and was wondering if this version would be to heavy to run on it. It has around 2 Gb RAM but am unsure if the desktop environment, particularly the MGSE environment (which I really like the look of) will make it run slowly

  • @jg2341 Should be fine. I've run Ubuntu (which is heavier on resources) on Netbooks of that age that only have 1GB RAM

  • @Hi675445 They shouldn't but it can happen when an update isn't thoroughly tested.

  • @Hi675445 Its the Gnome desktop that has that bar along the top. The Mate desktop is like Classic Gnome with the single Application bar at the bottom of the screen.

Log out and switch to the Gnome Desktop

  • how dit you get the mate bar on top mine has it missing

  • why do they release update that could harm u stuped ideare
