Little Bird-Beach Boys-Cover by Kayla Williams

***** To commemorate the upcoming Brian Wilson concert which I'll be attending on June 25, I am doing a Beach Boys cover each week until the show. I'm also going to run a little contest and the winner will choose the final song for me to record. I will also email the winner an mp3 version of their song!

Here is what you need to do:
Post a suggestion for the Beach Boys song you want me to cover in the comments of this video and upcoming videos. You can also enter by posting on my Facebook page, or tweeting it to me. You can make one suggestion per video release. You can suggest the same song more than once to increase your chances of it being randomly picked. I will have 5 videos (including this one) before the concert and I will record and release a video of the winning song after the concert. Good luck! ***

You can help me out greatly by commenting, favoriting, and telling your friends about me.

About this song:
This little ditty is off the 'Friends' album released in 1968. I first heard this song this whole album I guess, when I was 16. I was in full blown obsession at that time (not that I'm not now, but like teenage worship obsession). I loved this song from the first few bars. I love Dennis' voice, I love the progression and I love the beat. I actually thought it sounded like a really contemporary song, something that could have been on the radio, mostly because of the beat of the song. I was sitting down yesterday going through my BB collection trying to decide which song to do first and I wasn't finding anything that struck me in my mood until I stumbled across Little Bird. It's been raining for almost a week straight here and it just felt like the right kinda song. Hope you enjoy my version, I had fun making it!

  • Great job on Denny's song!

When I was a teen many years ago, I thought the lyrics were "the trout in the shiny brook gave a warm and loving look and told me not to worry about my life".

Your covers of BB songs always go straight to my heart, Thank You!

  • @careyyoung Thanks so much. Hahaha that's awesome. I was just listening to 'The Night Was So Young' and in the second chorus I always thought he said "Sheep is the ride, to hold me tonight". Oh misheard lyrics..

  • Great job capturing the feel of the original instrumentation on this one. Vocals are awesome, as always. Since everyone seems to be making requests, I would love to hear "Kiss Me, Baby" or "Please Let Me Wonder" from Today.

  • @GregoryOrme Thank you!

  • Great cover as always, particulaly like Dennis's stuff, usually very emotional and sincere. Been a BB fan since the sixties (yes I should be too old to enjoy youtube :-)).

How about a real challenge ? A couple of my offbeat favourites; "A Day In The Life Of A Tree" (original and meaningful, love it) or another Dennis favourite, "Cuddle Up" (you just need to get a symphony orchestera in there :-))

  • @neilperks Thanks, I love Dennis' music. He has such emotional singing and writing.

  • Greetings Kayla! I would like to suggest a Beach Boys tune that is probably not one you would typically think of as fitting your style - but it's one that I think has a good chance of commercial success. That song is "How She Boogalooed It" from the Wild Honey album. IMO give it a lot of energy almost as a punk rock song. My suggestion would be to keep that cool funky sounding guitar and happy organ riff in the bridge - and have it in the background.

  • Haunting this is so good, and once again how about Heaven for you to cover next. Dave

  • Haunting this is so good

  • very cool cover on this awesome Dennis tune

  • I would love to hear you do "Only With You"....and try to do it without crying!!! ;)

  • @neilperks Sounds great you should do look at your game girl by charles manson and change it to look at your game guy

  • Love your vocal and how you handle the background vocals! I do miss the video presentations you did for your other gems like Time To Get Alone and I Went To Sleep. I would love to hear you cover Only With You from Holland!

  • (while I still think the song you really should do is the Cryan Shames' "It Could Be We're In Love"... :-)

For the next Beach Boys song, I nominate "Aren't You Glad" (from Wild Honey).

Mid-tempo (which you seem to gravitate to), and not all that much multi-part harmony in their version, so there's 'space' for you to make it your own. Plus it's a great song, from a great album.

Looking forward to the next video!
