No, the scene where Jake tells the secretary that he'll wait for Mr. Yelburton is way funnier than this scene. You know: the one where he intentionally annoys her by humming and asking questions.

A bit of foreshadowing of the end of the movie there.
*SPOILER*
When I heard the held down horn at the end of the movie, i knew exactly what happened right then and there.

Loach: What happened to your nose, Gittes? Somebody slammed a bedroom window on it?
Jake Gittes: Nope. Your wife got excited. She crossed her legs a little too quick. You understand what I mean, pal? that's a lot funnier

Umm... Obviously you don't know much about the movie if you thought this was so funny. The whole movie is filled with foreshadowing if you watch closely, ESPECIALLY with Evelyn's character. This scene foreshadows the end when last sound she makes is the dead weight of her head hitting the horn of the car she was trying to escape in
Maybe it's funny at first but in hindsight it's extremely morgid
Ummmmmmm, there's no way Polanski put it in at this point expecting something other than the viewer bursting into laughter, or at least smiling. This is a very tense scene, and I don't think you can change the dynamics of it like this, while maintaining the seriousity. Chinatown is ironic and horrific at the same time, that's the beauty of it. And I've seen it at least 3 or 4 times, so yes, I do know a lot about it, even watched the extras (not to mention the amazing hungarian dub that it has).
