23andMe Genetic Testing: My Experience

With a history of certain cancers and diseases in my family, I very much stress early prevention and transparency with my doctor. However, in order to get early testing one usually requires proof of 2 blood family members who also had said health issues. Because my parents are both immigrants, its very difficult to get in touch with their family members.

My only choice seemed to be genetic testing. One of Google's founders' wife started a genetic testing company called 23andme (which google also invests in). Dispite the various privacy concerns, I still signed up and tried it. Check out my experience trying out the kit, share your experiences with me, and follow me through my journey.

Ancestry?

@allrightbrain it didn't offer much in terms of ancestry beyond the fact that I have eastern european in me... which I already knew... I wanted it to go deeper :(

I'm against it. They have your dna, you gave it to them. What can happen?...your health insurance can skyrocket, because of a "Higher than average risk"...your auto insurace will jump on it too...maybe you'll have blackouts...MAYBE you won't...but, if you have a "risk"...No home loan...you have a "risk" of dying before you pay it off!!! The information age is already stabbing us in the back...Why give somebody the pot to cook your goose in???

...Maybe ask your GP to do tests you feel necessary to check for said disease, if found negative wasting there time/money which could've been spent on saving others.But do you weigh that out with the chance it could be found positive and save your life?

Sorry if you've answered any of this before in other videos/comments as this is the only one I've seen

P.s.Im studying biomedicine and immunology and intend to be a doctor, so this is sadly quite interesting to me, please share your opinions :)

Interesting concept, apologies if I'm several months... or years behind, only just stumbled across it.

I'm not against it, I'd probably go for it myself. My concern is, is knowing too much possibly bad?

I guess it's how you take it, but if someone said to me you're 23% more likely to get X cancer, i'd feel paranoid, or it's only a matter of time and worry pointlessly? (continuing in next comment running out of characters...)

@ATouchOfMagic88 You're talking about 100,000 years ago, which is not relevant to us today, we have evolved since then, unless you're saying that modern Africans haven't evolved for 100,000 years.

None of the modern races are the same as back then although Africans and other third-world tribals are less evolved and more primitive. Some of them still live as if they were in the Stone Age such as the Papuan people.

If you go back far enough we're primates.

i will share my experience , they didnt tell me not to eat for like 30 minutesbut it was on the far inside of the label but oooopppse i did 15 mins but i thinkthey still can read my spit , but im excited to do this
