- South Pacific was about Michener's experience in the Navy in the same Solomon Islands that PT 109 operated in?
- The pilot to McHale's Navy was based on the PT 109 survival story
- Gilligan's island followed McHale's Navy, another story about a small boat and its survivors on a desert island in the south Pacific.

-John F Kennedy's PT boat was sunk in combat
-George Bush I was shot down in a Navy Avenger bomber
-Candidate John McCain was shot down in his Navy Skyhawk bomber.

Humor, satire, I can understand. This Viet Nam era Vet utterly can not appreciate comparing the 109's crew to the passengers aboard the SS Minnow from Gilligan's Island.. This ain't about partisanship . Good men and women put their lives on the line for our nation. They deserve our respect for what they do PERIOD

I tracked down the lineage of the Gilligan's Island - it followed McHale's Navy, also set in the south pacific, and that pilot was based on a stranded PT boat crew (now how many of those were there?) South Pacific was based a book by a guy who hung out with PT guys in the Solomon Islands, so the whole "desert island" (fantasy island, survivor) thing really started with the PT 109 story.
