We have been wanting to get a shot of The Tree of The Broken Sword for some time now. We just recently began to hang the fallen shinai. Had we been hanging them the entire time we have sword fought there would be 40 or 50 more. The area we fought in was very narrow, maybe 10 or 12 feet across. Perhaps next time it will be at a beach. One must always push themselves in battle and changing up the terrain is a good way to do this. Enjoy and more to follow.
@nagualshadow that is true there are certain strikes that are dependent on the target they are striking. ie if you are to slit a throat that would be dependent on there being no armour around the throat of course. i guess the only way to truly train and to do it safely will be when virtual reality is really invented - in a video game. maybe someday i'll get to fight you in a virtual reality sword fight - my katana vs your style :)

@maxgunn555 Many of the strikes are aimed at the face, but they are blocked, if you look closely and watch where the strikes are aimed and when we move. As for the armor its true you can go all out fighting. BUT you lose the sensory perception of your body. The attacks executed will always be based on the armor being worn, which we lead to MANY mutual kills, as in kendo, kumdo and gumbogi. By wearing no armor, it increases the seriousness of the strike. The reaction is more true to life,...

@nagualshadow well holding back would be only striking to the face once was it? out of a ten minute session or longer. also no point training if you're really going to injure yourself - i'd use full armour so you can just go all out like a real fight. and i'd stop if you take a real life hit coz ina real fight you'd be chopped in half/head sliced e.t.c.this is allof course if you are training pretending to use blades.

@maxgunn555 Actually we dont hold back at all. Every strike you see leaves, welts, bruises and sometimes cuts. We strive for realism within the fighting moment so we constantly push the limits of our control. Im curious to what you thought was "holding back" considering the last strike of the vid was straight to the face. Do you think that felt good?

not realistic unless you can go for all areas of the body without having to hold back due to lack of equipment.

@nagualshadow Haha, I know what you mean :) yeah sometimes kicks & punches are best for the clinching part, or when up close.

@KenpoBouzo There have been many times I tried to kick or punch him, but all he did was step back and hack my arm or leg. In all fight using blades that means death.

@KenpoBouzo Yes we do, but, that only worked in the beginning. Each of us us has come from very different MA backgrounds. In our first battles we would fall prey to the lock up-push, where we could employ disarming tactics or judo to take the person down. when I first began sword fighting my ideas were completely different from the reality it has become. Trifidus is incredibly wily, he doesnt stay around for holds, he jumps in and out of range. I have had to learn how to adapt to this.

A simple question, do you implement other martial arts in combination with your sword-techniques ? :) Hope all fares well ^^
