According to Chinese authorities, the H5N1 strain of bird flu has infected eight people and killed five across seven provinces in China so far this year.
But until last week—after more than 500 chickens died in northwest China—authorities had not reported an outbreak of the disease among birds.
Some experts worry that authorities could be missing, or concealing, these outbreaks.
One concern is that substandard bird flu vaccines may be hiding outward symptoms of the disease, while still allowing the virus to spread among the inoculated poultry.
In recent weeks, both domestic and wild birds infected with bird flu have washed up on the shores of Hong Kong.
Experts say the virus may have moved from domestic to wild birds, and could indicate an outbreak in southern China.
can't trust ANYTHING said coming out of China.
China is the most UNRELIABLE country in the world.
