For what it's worth, I prefer to split big pieces like that with wedges instead of my saw. Cutting into the end grain like that will dull a chain faster than anything. Wedges and a maul or sledge will bust up even big pieces with ... well, it's more effort than using a saw, but most things are.

@TextFreeley right, right, its just alot harder to split him down the middle rather than take chunks off the sides with a big ol log like that. the pieces are gonna be as nice as you split them off. to each there own i guess. i will have just enough wood this year to make the end of march. hopein for a warm april, lol. stay warm friend.

i just bought that same axe it works great!
looks like a pleasure to split nice looking fir like that. I have a whole back yard full of split wood just like your video. no need to use a chainsaw on easy splitting firewood, seems to be more for show.

@stoolie10 Maybe you were splitting wood of a smaller diameter. Also, this tree had been down for two years so it was pretty firm. Maybe I'm not as strong as you. I don't know, but no, it wasn't for show; it was easier.

why do you split em down the middle? why not just take chunks off the sides till its small enough to go down the middle?

@colbycous01 For consistancy. I wanted really even-sized wedges of wood. It probably wood have been easier and faster to take chunks off the sides but I was splitting it to sell, so I was going for uniformity. I might try that, though. I've seen a lot of slabs cut from the sides as you describe. Burned a lot of them, too.

@colbycous01 probably just for uniformity. Good question.
