This testimony took place at the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish's October 2 game commission meeting. At risk was a department program to control lions in the Guadalupe Mountains. The Wild Earth Guardians had petitioned the game commission to cease the program in order to increase lion population which is growing by leaps and bounds every year. Currently lions overpopulate several areas of New Mexico and have limited food sources. The Game Commission elected to cease the program anyway, despite over a hundred people testifying at the meeting that they not do so and three or four testifying that they wanted more lions and less lion control.
Lion attacks and encounters are on the rise in NM as are lion sightings in the daytime and lion deaths by automobile. This is indicative of a population without proper habitat and food supply of native deer and other small wildlife.
