Karl Tellenbach (1877-1931) is one of Bern's most famous characters. In 1970, director Kurt Früh was the first to tell the true story of the Bernese barber, known as Dällebach Kari, for a cinema audience.

More than 40 years later, director Xavier Koller, whose Journey of Hope was named Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars in 1991, brings the tale back on screen. His version opened the 47th Solothurn Film Festival on January 19.

It's the universal story of a witty and charming outsider who, despite his disability (a cleft lip), wins the heart of the beautiful Annemarie. Their happiness seems perfect, but it turns out that Annemarie's upper-class parents have made other plans for their daughter...
